The Pill vs. Cancer

Since "the pill" became an optional form of birth control in the 1960s, scientists have been doing research on the possibility of the pill increasing the risk of cancer. They have come to conclusion that certain cancers including breast and ovarian cancers depend on certain sexual hormones to grow and develop. One of these main hormones is progesterone. Progesterone secretes during the second half of the menstrual cycle and constructs the endometrium to receive the egg. The progesterone pill makes the body believe that it is already pregnant by releasing these hormones while preventing others to secrete. This overload of progestin make be the cause of some cancers. Study shows that breast and cervical cancer is increased while taking birth control. Currently studies are inconclusive of whether or not the pill is related to cancer but research is still on going.

Qué es la vida?

The question of life is actually one that does not exactly have a conclusive answer. The real answer does not lie out there in google search but it is our own perspective. I think that anything that has cells and is able to reproduce in someone is considered to be alive which technically is life. Bacteria, amoebas, single celled organisms, viruses, plants, and more are examples of life. Organisms must reproduce, feed, grow, and respirate to stay alive.
pretty cool article on life

Blood Types

Although all blood is made of the same basic elements, not all blood is alike. In fact, there are eight different common blood types, which are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens – substances that can trigger an immune response if they are foreign to the body. Since some antigens can trigger a patient's immune system to attack the transfused blood, safe blood transfusions depend on careful blood typing and cross-matching.

I am an AB- which is actually the rarest blood type out there. This means that I can receive any blood type given to me.

A Blood types should avoid foods such as:

  • beef
  • pork
  • potatoes
  • bananas
B Blood types should avoid:
  • chicken
  • shrimp
  • corn
  • coconut
AB blood types should avoid:
  • Bacon
  • Chicken
  • Oranges
  • Artichokes

O blood types should avoid:
  • Pork
  • Catfish
  • Cabbage
  • Blackberries

Where in the world is Mitochondrial Eve?!

Mitochondrial Eve is believed to be the woman who all current day woman may possibly stem from. This "Eve" woman was said to originate from somewhere within the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The data supporting this theory is currently inconclusive but it is still supported and a pretty good starting point in my opinion. I think that it would make sense that this Eve existed because where else would the diversity come from. I think that somewhere in the DNA family line(if that makes sense) that somewhere everyone can be matched with another.

Extremophiles to the extreme

"An extremophile (from Latin extremus meaning "extreme" and Greek philiā (φιλία) meaning "love") is an organism that thrives in physically or geochemically extreme conditions that are detrimental to most life on Earth.[1][2] In contrast, organisms that live in more moderate environments may be termed mesophiles or neutrophiles. The category name is unfortunate as it calls for subjective judgements of two issues - firstly, the degree of deviation from 'normal' justifying the use of 'extreme', and secondly, whether the organism prefers the environment or merely tolerates it."Wiki Extremophile

The movie we watched in class was pretty sweet. Seeing these creatures who live at the darkest depths of the sea and some in thermal vents was awesome. My favorite was the Pompeii worm. I liked this organism the most because it is able to live in waters up to 176°F. I thought that was pretty cool and amazing. Could you imagine living in heat like that your whole live? Not only to live but to flourish? Pretty amazing.

Sunflower Plant

My plant did well for the first few weeks. It took awhile for it to get big but once it did it shot up inches at a time. At one point it had died and after a few days of watering it it came back to life but not for long. About a week later it had wilted and died for good. I was pretty impressed with my plant because I had very limited sunlight on my side of the building for the plant but it did pretty well.
